Kgs, Lyngby, Denmark, 2014/05/07 - Crown Paints’ new state-of-the-art high-speed filling line is faster, much greener and more efficient and it began production in January this year - Hempel.com.
After almost 12 months of work and an investment of over EUR 1 million, Crown Paints’ new high-speed filling line is now fully up and running. Located at Crown Paints’ manufacturing site in Hull in the UK, the line offers faster filling rates along with significant savings in the usage of water needed to clean paint delivery pipework, electrical power and compressed air.
According to Joe Devitt, Managing Director at Crown Paints, the new line is a significant step in Crown Paints’ manufacturing strategy, which was developed in 2013 to increase production, reduce costs and improve environmental performance.
“As a leader in the UK decorative coatings market, it’s essential that we seek to continuously improve our manufacturing and operational efficiencies,” he explains. “It is an investment which will pay huge long-term dividends by helping us to streamline production.”
Meeting customer demands for greener products
Customers in the UK increasingly demand greater environmental awareness from manufacturers. Crown Paints already has a strong green profile and has won a number of sustainability awards in recent years.
It is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10 per cent by 2015 and 25 per cent by 2020 through its earthbalance® programme, and the new line will contribute by reducing the amount of pipe-cleaning water, electricity and compressed air used in the production process.
Hard work done in-house
The new line required complex work at the factory, including the installation of new pumps and filters and the construction of more than 60 metres of pipework and much of the work was carried out in-house.
“The engineering team played a vital role and worked tirelessly to prepare for the new high-speed line,” says Joe Devitt. “The project showcased an extremely high standard of workmanship. Everything went to plan and we’re delighted to be fully operational so quickly.”
Global capacity expansion
The high-speed filling line is just one part of the capacity investments Hempel is making as part of its One Hempel One Ambition strategy.
Hempel (hempel.com) recently opened a new factory in Saudi Arabia, and the company is also expanding capacity in India, Malaysia, Kuwait and Russia. By 2015, these investments will give Hempel the capacity to produce around 230 million litres more per year compared to 2010.
