There is no treatment for HPV, only treatment for the symptoms.

This new vaccine is highly effective in preventing HPV infection, the major cause of cervical cancer in women. The vaccine protects against four types of HPV, including two that cause about 70% of cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2006, over 9,710 U.S. women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3,700 will die from this disease.

On February 2nd, Governor Rick Perry executed an order that mandates that all 11 and 12 year old female children must be vaccinated prior to entering the 6th grade effective September of 2008, however any female from 9 to 18 can receive the vaccine through the Vaccines for Children Program.

“The fact that we can vaccinate against the leading cause of cervical cancer is a real breakthrough in science.” said Dusty Warden, Outreach Coordinator for ProAction Community Health. “We hope that every one can understand the importance of curbing an STD while protecting young women against cervical cancer.”

ProAction will be working with area schools to help educate the public on the value of the vaccine as well as establish clinics to help ensure that all children in need of the vaccine have an affordable and efficient way of doing so.

Vaccinations against HPV are available at the Tillman Health Center every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 AM-12 NOON and 2:30–5PM. Cost of the shot is only $10.00. For more information, you can visit ImmunizeElPaso.org/.
