The premiere of the CBS sitcom “Rules of Engagement” highlighted an issue facing many couples. Reflecting the real-life situation couples everywhere, Audrey (Megyn Price) tells Jeff (Patrick Warburton), her husband of 12 years, they need more “couple friends.”
The traditional way for couples to meet other couples has been by getting involved in community organizations. Last year, a Duke University study found that Americans have smaller social networks than they did 20 years ago, including fewer contacts through neighbors, clubs and organizations. The resulting social fragmentation serves as another roadblock for self-described “crazy busy” couples to finding and making new “couple friends.”
This is especially true for couples who have hit relationship transition points – such as recently getting engaged or married, relocating to a new area, becoming first-time parents, or retired. Couples around the country are finding it to be a challenge to find like-minded couples with shared values and interests.
But Couplets.com, a growing online social network with members in 45 states, is designed specifically to help couples meet other, like-minded couples. The service – currently available free – enables member couples to easily identify and connect with other couples based on shared interests and locations.
“Today’s couples need new ways to meet other couples. Many of our member couples themselves met online, so it’s natural they are going online as couples because online social networking makes it quick, easy and convenient to find new couple friends who share their interests,” said Jay Chalnick, president, Couplets.com. “As we expected, Couplets.com members range the spectrum. We’ve got members in their 20s with the oldest in their 70s. We’ve got couples who are straight, gay, dating, engaged, living together, married, new parents or new retires. What’s interesting is that we’re finding a majority live in big cities across the country – while we initially thought we might see more suburban couples. What they all have in common is the realization that they need more ‘couple friends.’”
How Couplets.com Works
Within minutes of joining, new members can search for other couples based on zip code and similar interests based on a checklist of more than 40 different activities they enjoy together including dining, sports, theatre, and volunteering. They can learn more about other members by reading what they have to say, like how they met or brief descriptions of themselves. When they find an interesting couple, members can contact them securely via the Couplets.com website; privacy is maintained because email addresses are exchanged only when two couples agree to do so. (Personally identifiable information such as last name, home address, email address, and phone number are not disclosed to other members.)
