St. Louis, MO, United States, 2014/03/11 - McCarthy recently substantially completed construction five weeks ahead of schedule for a $115 million orthopedic hospital for Mercy in Springfield, Mo - Mercy.net / McCarthy.com.
McCarthy broke ground in summer 2011 on the new 199,000-square-foot hospital, which recently opened to the public.
Mercy’s orthopedic and spine specialists now provide a wide range of services, including general orthopedics, total joint replacements and spine care, in the new four-story hospital that includes 10 operating rooms, 48 inpatient beds, a clinic, café and retail pharmacy.
The project employed approximately 2,000 craftspeople, with 93 percent of subcontracted work performed by local contractors.
“We were able to keep the majority of the subcontracted work local due to the high level of qualified subcontractors and skilled trade workers in the area,” said McCarthy Senior Project Manager Jared Hites, LEED® AP BD+C. “It is always a priority for McCarthy to hire local when possible.”

Hites added that McCarthy utilized the latest in field technology to keep the project on track and trouble free, including BIM 360 Field, Electronic Document Management, field tablets and on-site information kiosk and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing robotics. McCarthy also field tested 100 percent of the glazing systems to successfully eliminate any potential problems with the window systems.
The project continues to provide jobs, as the hospital will employ more than 250 people, and at least 200 of those positions are new. Doctors started seeing patients in the clinic in mid-August, and the first surgery in the new building is scheduled for mid-September. Dallas-based HKS served as project architect.
“We’re committed to keeping people healthy, and we know staying active plays a huge role in how we feel and our quality of life,” said Dr. Robert W. Steele, president of Mercy Hospital Springfield. “This facility is going to allow us to help our patients live well into old age with as much spring in their step as possible.”
