The company will use the event to make local bus operators aware of major benefits they can achieve by implementing an effective fleet management solution. The SABOA conference is being held at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria and MiX Telematics can be visited at Stand 44/45.
“Proven safety and efficiency results help our bus and coach customers drive their operation forward,” says Gert Pretorius, Managing Director of MiX Telematics (Africa Fleet Solutions). “In addition to saving an average of 10% on fuel costs, our customers report lowered CO2 emissions and reduced accident rates. They also reduce costs related to vehicle wear-and-tear, while improving customer service and enhancing passenger comfort.”

According to SABOA, there are about 25,000 buses in South Africa. “We’re keen to partner with local operators and equip them with fleet management tools that’ll help bring about sustainable improvements,” says Pretorius.

“Most operators seem detached from taking advantage of fleet management technology that’s available to them. That’s where MiX Telematics comes in; we have the experience and technology to help close that gap,” adds Pretorius.

He explains that knowing the location of vehicles and drivers forms only one part of an effective fleet management solution; another key component is driver behaviour monitoring. For MiX Telematics customers, this is made possible with the company’s in-cab ‘RIBAS’ display a dashboard-mounted device which provides drivers with real-time feedback on their performance. Five important driving events are monitored: ‘over-Revving’, ‘excessive Idling’, ‘harsh Braking’, ‘harsh Acceleration’ and ‘over-Speeding’.

Should drivers exceed a pre-programmed parameter, audio-visual alerts give them the opportunity to rectify poor driving habits such as over-revving or excessive idling. Should drivers not rectify their behaviour, an event is recorded and sent to the fleet manager who has 24-hour access to fleet-related data and reports. Driver behaviour reports provide fleet managers with the opportunity to identify high-risk areas and driver behaviour patterns.

“Targeted driver training then becomes a possibility, supporting both the driver and the business objectives around safe and efficient driving. The RIBAS display is not intended as a punitive tool; rather, it serves to heighten awareness and modify driver behaviour,” adds Pretorius.

“There is no doubt that driver safety should be a priority for anyone whose business relies on the use of South African roads,” says Pretorius. “In fact, any business that owns or operates a fleet of vehicles should pause for serious reflection on how to increase their own safety performance.”

According to MiX Telematics, a necessary addition to any safety strategy is driver training. “These are the very people responsible for operating on the road for hours at a time. Without the right tools and training to aid them on their journey, improvement becomes difficult to ensure,” emphasises Pretorius.

Tens of thousands of buses worldwide are currently connected to MiX Telematics. Countries in which bus and coach customers can be found include South Africa, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
