Dairy Australia Group Manager Farm Productivity and Delivery, Chris Murphy, has welcomed the announcement that Retreat Creek, a farm owned by western Victorian dairy farmers John and Clare Cotton, will become a partner farm for the FutureDairy project when they install Australia’s second robotic rotary automatic milking system.

The innovative robotic rotary technology was developed for the automatic milking of larger grazing herds by dairy equipment company DeLaval in collaboration with the FutureDairy team, whose major sponsors for the Retreat Creek research project are Dairy Australia, DeLaval and the University of Sydney.

“Dairy Australia welcomes the news of the partner farm and it is pleasing to see the new robotic rotary is going to be at a Victorian farm as it means many dairy farmers will be able to observe how it works with larger herds of 600-800 cows and become familiar with the benefits,” said Mr Murphy.

The development of the robotic rotary involved a unique private-public partnership, achieving a truly revolutionary product, from concept to commercial reality in six years. This was made possible with the contribution of DeLaval’s engineering and product expertise, FutureDairy’s scientists and Dairy Australia’s industry perspective.

“The fundamental role of Dairy Australia is to support dairy farmers build their business into profitable enterprises, and the robotic rotary system presents many potential opportunities we will study with interest, ’ Mr Murphy added.

FutureDairy project leader, Associate Professor Kendra Kerrisk, said that the robotic rotary had been proven under commercial conditions at Gala Farm in Tasmania but the ability of the system to perform with larger herds remained uncharted territory.

The FutureDairy team will investigate how the robotic rotary, once installed at Retreat Creek, will affect larger herd dynamics, voluntary cow movement, water and energy use, the impact on labour and lifestyle and farm financial performance.
