The Twin Cities Community Hospital Governing Board recently introduced five new board members for the 2014 term. The new members will join the 15-member body of system representatives, staff physicians and community representatives charged with overseeing the medical staff, the quality of professional services, and general business affairs of the hospital.

Incoming board members include two new community representatives: Heritage Oaks Bank, Templeton Branch Manager/Assistant Vice President Maria Eskandanian, and Kennedy Club Fitness Founder and CEO Kevin Kennedy. Additionally, the board elected three physicians: Jonathan Riegler, M.D., Dr. Thomas Hale, M.D., and Sergio Toledo, M.D., M.A.

“After considering several potential candidates, the Governing Board is happy to inaugurate these esteemed leaders as hospital and community representatives for 2014,” says Twin Cities CEO Mark Lisa. “With the assistance of these talented, dedicated members, we will continue to provide the North County community with the best healthcare, the safest environment, and the greatest customer care possible.”

Board Member Maria Eskandanian, who has led Heritage Oaks Bank’s Templeton Branch since its founding in 2006, got her start at the San Diego Medical Federal Credit Union where she served as the Marketing/Public Relations Manager. Responsible for founding the San Diego Marketing Association and the Marketing Association for Credit Unions, she led the effort of unifying credit unions with a cohesive message to the media. Eskandanian has served on the Templeton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for five years (including one year as Treasurer); is the Founding Director of the Templeton Women in Business, which she has chaired for the last six years; and was a member of the Templeton Rotary Club for three years.

Board Member and former triathlete Kevin Kennedy and his wife, Barbara, founded Kennedy Club Fitness in Atascadero in 1981. Today, the business consists of four multipurpose athletic clubs in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles, with the goal of making San Luis Obispo County “the healthiest place in the world.” The Atascadero Club remains the corporate headquarters and the Kennedy family has lived in Atascadero for 32 years.

Gastroenterologist Jonathan Riegler, M.D. has been with the Central Coast Gastroenterology Medical Group since 2008 and has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for Gastroenterology since 1993. A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Riegler completed his post-graduate studies at Duke University Medical Center for Internal Medicine and his fellowship training in Gastroenterology at the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to coming to the Central Coast, Dr. Riegler worked as a staff physician in Texas, assistant professor at University of California at Davis and University of Texas Health Science Center, staff gastroenterologist in San Diego, and attending physician in Montana.

Thomas Hale, M.D. is a former Twin Cities Chief of Staff (1997-1998) and current Emergency Department Physician for both Twin Cities Community Hospital and Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Dr. Hale previously served on the Twin Cities Governing Board from 1991-2002 (as its chairman from 1994-1995). Also the acting President of the Central Coast Emergency Physicians Board of Directors, he brings with him over 30 years of medical practice experience and a long list of medical industry appointments and awards. Dr. Hale received his doctorate from the University of Nebraska Medical School, and completed his post-graduate studies at the UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Medical School.

Sergio M. Garcia-Toledo, M.D., M.A., is Twin Cities’ current Hospitalist. A graduate of UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, he worked as an admitting physician and hospitalist for the Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center before moving to the Central Coast in 2011.
