Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, 2013/10/10 - Over the last 20 years, close to 45,000 computers have been refurbished by SaskTel Pioneer volunteers and donated to Saskatchewan schools through Computer for Schools (CFS) Program - SaskTel.com.
CFS is a national, federal government-led initiative that operates in cooperation with all provinces and territories, the private and volunteer sectors. In Saskatchewan, the SaskTel Pioneers and the Saskatchewan Technology Renewal Inc. collect and repair donated surplus computers from government and private sector sources and distributes them to schools, public libraries and not-for-profit learning organizations.
“SaskTel is proud of our Pioneers’ 20 years of partnership with Computers for Schools,” said SaskTel President and CEO Ron Styles. “Their work not only complements our goal of managing our corporate impact on the environment, but also puts technology in the hands of our young people. This program could very well be putting computers and laptops into the hands of our future engineers, computer programmers or other technical employees.”
“The technology has changed immensely over the last 20 years, but the goal of the program remains the same: Helping students in kindergarten to grade 12 get exposed to computer technology,” said Crawford McKee, Provincial Coordinator of Saskatchewan Technology Renewal Inc. “The world is getting more and more technical and all Saskatchewan children need the opportunity for hands on learning.”
The two volunteer repair and refurbishing centers in Regina and Saskatoon and the technical Work Experience Program workshop in La Ronge now refurbish and prepare about 4,000 computers for distribution to schools each year. Donations come from both the public and private sector, stored at space donated by SaskTel, refurbished by SaskTel Pioneer volunteers and donated at no cost to Saskatchewan schools, school divisions and public libraries and non-profit learning organizations.
