A rather lack luster session as we begin the final few days of January. The major indices didn’t know which way to go as the session was a battle between the Bulls and the Bears. At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the day: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) moved slightly higher by 3.76 points to end the session at 12490.78; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) moved lower by 14.55 points to end at 9139.55; the NASDAQ moved slightly higher by 5.60 points to close at 2441.09; the S&P 500 fell 1.57 points to end at 1420.62 and the RUSSELL 2000 gained 4.96 points to close at 793.10. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the worlds investable market capitalization) moved higher by 0.30 to close at 239.51 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 moved higher by 3.33 points to close at 5957.46.
Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index rose by 0.6% in December over November; Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index was higher by 1.8% in Dec compared to a year ago and Chicago Fed Index for Regional Auto Output rose by 1.7% in December over November.
Dallas Fed January Manufacturing Production Index came in at 13.8 versus December drop by 5.2 and Dallas Fed January Business Activity hit 4.7 versus December drop by 8.8.
Economic data released for the day:
On the commodities markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Light crude moved lower by $1.41 to close at $54.01 a barrel; Heating Oil closed lower by $0.04 again today at $1.56 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower by $0.22 to end the day at $6.94 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas closed lower by $0.04 again today at $1.44 a gallon.
Metals ended the session lower across the board again today: Gold moved lower by $1.60 to close at $649.10 an ounce; Silver closed lower by $0.13 at $13.25 an ounce; Platinum fell by $6.80 to close at $1,174.70 an ounce and Copper ended the day lower by $0.10 to close at $2.54 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat markets, the trend was mostly lower across the board today: Lean Hogs closed lower by 0.15 to close at 67.70; Pork Bellies closed the day lower by 1.65 at 98.55; Live Cattle closed lower by 0.18 to end the day at 93.40 and Feeder Cattle ended the day higher by 1.30 to close at 95.40.
Other Commodities: Corn gave up 5.50 to close at 400.00 and Soybeans moved lower by 1.00 to close at 709.50.
Bonds were lower across the board today: 2 year bond closed lower by 1/32 at 99 25/32; 5 year bond closed lower by 2/32 at 99 13/32; 10 year bond closed lower by 4/32 at 97 4/32 and the 30 year bond closed lower by 2/32 at 92 24/32.
The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 3,812,473. Open Interest for Futures moved lower by 81,638 to close at 9,232,999 and the Open Interest for Options moved lower by 210,787 to close at 7,310,870 for a total Open Interest of 16,545,137 for a total loss on the day by 292,319.
The mini Dow ended the session with no change today to close at 12523. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 139,426 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. New York Stock Exchange movers for the day: Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Incorporated (CME) plummeted 13.01 points to end at $575.85 for the day; USG Corporation (USG) gave up 2.90 points to close at $52.60; Tesora Corporation (TSO) moved higher by 4.73 points for a closing price of $78.55 and First Republic Bank (FRC) made a super spike today to tack on 15.33 points to close at $53.63.
On the NASDAQ today, advancers came in at 1,785; decliners totaled 1,260; unchanged came in at 148; new highs came in at 160 and new lows came in at 31. Gainers and losers for the day on the NASDAQ: Laureate Education Incorporation (LAUR) rallied higher by 6.79 points to end at $61.20; Altiris Incorporated (ATRS) rallied higher by 5.39 points to close at $32.53; Molecular Devices Corporation (MDCC) rallied higher by 11.12 points for a gain on the day by 46.57% to close at $35.00; Focus Media Holding Limited (FMCN) gained 5.46 points to close at $84.75 and MicroStrategy Incorporated (MSTR) fell 4.72 points to end at $121.22 for the session.
