A local business mom has decided to combine her passion for fundraising for breast cancer research with her entrepreneurial skills to launch a campaign that raises awareness about the disease and funds for CancerCare Manitoba.
“Like so many others Manitobans, my life has been impacted by breast cancer. Both my aunt and my mother-in-law are battling the disease,” comments Marlo, “so what I hope to do is create more awareness about the Weekend to End Breast Cancer event here in Winnipeg, the disease itself, and raise funds to help find a cure.”
Boux has created an online journal that will chronicle her personal training journey and serve as an information portal where people can find news articles and links pertaining to the latest breast cancer research information. What she is most excited about is a podcast that she is designing especially for the online journal.
“What I would love to see happen is for persons touched by breast cancer - whether directly through a diagnosis, or indirectly as a family member or friend of a breast cancer patient – to contact me to be interviewed about their experiences and appear on the podcast,” Boux says.
Marlo hopes her efforts encourage others to join the 2007 Weekend to End Breast Cancer Walk and donate generously to the cause. “I have set a minimum fundraising goal of $2000. I know it’s lofty, but I think I can do it,” she says. When asked how she plans to train for the event she said: “Thankfully, I enjoy distance training and have participated in similar events since Junior High school. The online journal will also serve as a personal motivator and a tool to keep me accountable to my training schedule.”
