ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market & technology forecast consultancy addressing the fiber optics communications industry, today announced the release of their annual market forecast and analysis of the use of fiber optic connectors and mechanical splices in communication applications.

According to ElectroniCast (electronicast.com), the worldwide fiber optic connector/mechanical splice consumption value reached $2.39 billion in 2012. The consumption value was led by private data networks applications in 2012 with 51 percent share or $1.2 billion. The Telecommunication use is forecast to increase at a rate of 14.5% per year, from $669 million in 2012 to $1.3 billion in 2017, mainly driven by access fiber deployment. Global use of single mode connectors reached $786 million last year. Telecom networks dominate the consumption of single mode connectors. Market forecast data in the market study refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data.

Fiber optic connector/mechanical splice units are used in a variety of Military/ Aerospace applications requiring rigorous testing and meet harsh environment fiber optic (HEFO) specifications. “The consumption in Military/Aerospace applications was $270 million in 2012. HEFO connectors are also used in other Specialty applications, such as automotive, oil/gas, underwater, industrial, sensors and several other user-groups,” said Stephen Montgomery, Director of the Fiber Optic Component group at ElectroniCast.

Multimode connector consumption value is forecast to grow at an average rate of 17.4% (2012-2017). Multimode fiber is best suited for use in short lengths, such as those used in Local Area Networks (LANs), High Performance Computing (HPC), Data Centers (DCs), Big Data, Storage Area Networks (SANs) and other applications.

Technological advances in fiber optics are assuring the migration of fiber closer and closer to the end user, which then translates into demand for shorter and shorter links including board-to-board interconnects. “The trend toward smaller connectors, mainly multifiber connectors, reducing both space requirements and costs per fiber interconnect. Although these connectors are miniaturized and they must achieve high precision of fiber-to-fiber alignment,” Montgomery added.
