Picture a runner about to embark on a race, in the best shape of her life, having trained for months and primed perfectly to take on the miles ahead. Now imagine that she’s stopped in her tracks before the race even begins.
This sudden inertness is what many natural resource startups face when looking for funding, despite having enormous potential.
Shoal Market is a first-of-its-kind, newly-launched venture designed to address this hurdle by connecting startups in the natural resource industry to a large universe of active, like-minded investors who have a passion to see startups succeed.
“Having a great idea and a viable business plan but not getting access to the right capital and expertise to make that idea a reality is a real challenge today”, says Shoal Market founder and Wall Street veteran Henning von Kalm. “Shoal Market is the right platform to address that challenge and revolutionize how startups obtain much needed capital.”
The vision for Shoal Market is simple and effective. The online platform allows for pre-vetted startups to engage with a pool of active investors, utilizing easy and secure technology. As a result, the funding of great ideas will be simplified, while also allowing for the exchange of ideas and other value-add services via the platform. Shoal Market believes firmly that many great ideas fail due to lack of adequate and efficient fundraising despite having a strong and sound business case.
New venture emerges at a pivotal time for the industry
Today, the natural resources industry which Shoal Market defines to include oil & gas, metals & mining, specialty chemicals, renewable energy, power and water stands at a crucial transformation point: the U.S. is expected to become the world’s top oil and gas producer in five years, the coal industry will continue to see significant innovation to experience transformation towards becoming a cleaner energy source, and the water industry will face the challenge of meeting demand, which is expected to double in the next 20 years. These are just a few examples of areas for likely growth.
“At Shoal Market, we believe that the industry is ripe for innovation and change, but more is needed,” says Senior Product Manager Surya Mohan. “We are committed to developing Shoal Market as the right platform to attract investment and meet the challenges of the future.”
