A Silicon-Valley based startup is looking to advance vertical flight and has unveiled an original aircraft configuration that performs all forms of take-off and landing approach. It is able to use runways of any size, from full-size military and commercial jet runways to the most compact helipads. Its airframe is capable of performing conventional take-offs (CTOL), vertical take-offs (VTOL), and short take-offs and vertical landings (STOVL) and provides the most flexibility to its operator.

This new aircraft, called Elytair, is classed as a “convertiplane" because it can convert from VTOL to CTOL in flight. Like helicopters, Elytair can hover and provide point-to-point transportation, however it vastly outperforms them in cruise speed and fuel economy. Although helicopters are very efficient while hovering, they are inefficient during forward flight. Elytair achieves its highest efficiency at speeds that are 2 to 3 times faster than the fastest helicopters. To achieve this, Elytair blends two airframes each with an optimal wing configuration: a small Tilt-Wing for vertical flight and a Box-Wing for conventional flight. The result is an all-lifting three-wing configuration which provides the best ratio of lift versus drag. Another major benefit of this configuration is the excellent stability in all flight regimes including the conversions.

The designers of Elytair have proved their concept through extended flight testing of scaled UAVs, launched from runways at Moffett Field, CA. This testing included all CTOL, STOVL and VTOL envelops, as well as full-size airframe modeling and CFD simulations. One design models a mid-size personnel transport for 10 people with a Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) of 11,500 lbs, approx. 5 tons, and flight simulations report a cruise speed of 325 knots at 30,000 ft and a fast cruise of 350 knots at 35,000 ft. This is very comparable to best Turboprops in operation today. Elytair, named with the goal to offer Elite personnel Air transportation solutions, will be offered as a design platform through selective licensing agreements, for either manned or unmanned applications.

About Team Elytair

Team Elytair (elytair.com) has conducted over 10 years of research in the challenging field of efficient convertiplane flight, has simulated various airframe configurations through detailed simulator design, have licensed their simulator technology to over 1,200 testers and pilots and have several issued and pending patents. Since 2007, Team Elytair has flown and tested several UAV prototypes, performed 100+ sorties and garnered significant flight data and experience which led today to Elytair, an optimal airframe design for STOVL operation.
