Cranleigh, Surrey, United Kingdom, 2013/04/30 - Whitesales are a specialist manufacturer and distributor of commercial skylights and specialist flat roof light and flat roof glazing products. They worked on the Cowes Enterprise College project on the Isle of Wight - Whitesales.co.uk.
Achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating has been a key target for the landmark building. The state-of-the-art school has been designed with the environment in mind and where possible the building is as environmentally responsible and resource efficient. Heating and hot water will be supplied by the building’s own biomass plant, and a 4500m 2 bio-diverse green roof will create a nature reserve. The site also features a number of community facilities including a conference centre, an outdoor amphitheatre and a green gym.
The flat roof is central to the building. This includes large areas of glazing, which allows the college to capitalise on natural daylight and ventilation. Whitesales used a modular rooflight construction with a bitumen 3 layer membrane, which is both high quality and durable.
The rooflights maximise light and thermal efficiency meeting the stringent BREEAM criteria. They also have a clean and minimal finish, which is both impressive and in keeping with the overall aesthetic.
Whitesales provided a complete design for the building as well as manufacturing and installing the made to measure rooflights, ensuring that all legal requirements for thermal transmission, impact resistance and ventilation were met in order to hit the target BREEAM Excellent rating.
59 rooflights were installed in total over an 18 week period, including rooflights from Whitesales’ Em-Dome modular polycarbonate range. These particular rooflights have a patented high security screwbolt fixing, which is used to prevent and discourage forced entry. They also have an impact strength of up to 250 times greater than glass.
Whitesales’ also used their Em-Glaze Glass continuous rooflights at 24 monopitch and octagonal roof areas, which have been used to flood the classrooms and conference areas below with light. The rooflights have an innovative flush design which aids efficient drainage and insulation.
Will Goodenough, marketing manager at Whitesales said: “Both the Em-Dome and Em-Glaze rooflight product ranges are high performing, highly durable rooflights, which make them the ideal solution for Cowes Enterprise College, where factors including daylight levels, thermal efficiency and security are paramount. As with all our products, we offer the client a 20 year guarantee on all our rooflight products, and we will be returning to the site periodically to ensure they continue to perform at their best.”
The Cowes Enterprise College will be completed by the summer of 2013.
