A New survey was released this week from e Skills UK highlighting the worsening state of skills in the IT sector.

According to the survey, just under one in five UK employers said that their staff had gaps in their IT skills whilst one in ten said there were gaps in the skills of their specialist ICT staff.

Gavin Freed, Managing Director of Sheffield based Civica UK spoke about the importance of training saying. “ICT is a fast moving environment and it’s vital that employers help to keep their staff up to date with the latest technologies.
Over the last year we have received help with our staff training programme through a South Yorkshire based initiative called ‘Come and Get It!’ and it has helped us to strengthen even further our commitment to staff training."

The Survey painted a worrying picture of the sector with the percentage of ICT professionals in training falling from 31% to 29% over the Q1 – Q2 period in 2006. However, there was some good news for employers as the Learning and Skills Council South Yorkshire confirmed the continuation of the “Come and Get It” programme despite the end of its European Objective One funding.

Mr Freed continued saying, “The ‘Come and Get It’ programme has been a valuable part of our training scheme and I’m pleased to hear that other businesses will be continue able to benefit from the support it offers.”

“The Civica group has always recognised the need to train employees and has benefited because of it.”
