The term macrofiltration is currently a poorly defined catch-all used to describe any physical filtration technology that removes particles in the 1-50um size range. This report will focus on technologies that perform filtration in the 1-30um size range and which are used primarily in fine particle filtration applications.

Fine particle filtration has historically been one of the primary methods used in the treatment of drinking water, removing coarse and fine particles from raw water prior to disinfection. In the past 20 years, such technologies have taken on a new role; the removal of particles from feedwater of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems. Macrofiltration technologies are also playing a growing role in tertiary treatment of effluent at sites discharging to particularly sensitive receiving waters or in sites where water reuse is the ultimate objective.

While the basic fluid dynamic concepts behind modern filtration practices have been around for over 100 years, the area has and continues to see a high level of technological innovation.

This report will discuss the technologies used to achieve macrofiltration, discuss the areas of innovation within each technology type and highlight the main technology providers. The report provides an estimate of the market share of the main macrofiltration technologies and market areas addressed. Market trends, barriers and drivers are discussed and analyzed. The leading technology providers and innovative niche suppliers are profiled.
