Mega slosh was the trend today as we began the shortened trading week. Volatility was very slim, trading volume was light to moderate and the markets went no where, real fast. At the end of the session, here is how the major indices stacked up: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) gained 26.51 points to close at 12582.59; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) shed 0.38 points to end at 9,139.56; the NASDAQ fell lower by 5.04 points to end at 2497.78; the S&P 500 gained 1.17 points to end at 1431.90 and the RUSSELL 2000 fell by 2.76 points to end at 791.50. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the worlds investable market capitalization) moved lower by 0.68 to close at 239.57 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 moved higher by 3.84 points to close at 5957.94.
Economic data released for the day:
Empire State Manufacturing Survey Index: A survey conducted by the New York Fed of manufacturers in the state of New York. The participants are from a variety of industries across the state and give their view of the likely direction of certain indicators, throughout the upcoming next six months. New York Fed's January Manufacturing Index came in at 9.13 versus 22.19 in December; New York Fed's January New Orders came in at 10.26 versus 22.52 in December; New York Fed's January Employment came in at 6.91 versus 18.60 in December and New York Fed's January Prices Received came in at 19.15 versus 13.48 in December.
On the commodities markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Light crude moved lower by $1.78 to close at $51.21 a barrel; Heating Oil closed lower by $0.02 at $1.48 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower by $0.01 to end the day at $6.69 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas closed lower by $0.06 at $1.37 a gallon.
Metals ended the session lower across the board today: Gold moved lower by $1.00 to close at $625.90 an ounce; Silver closed lower by $0.26 at $12.63 an ounce; Platinum moved lower today by $6.30 to close at $1,145.80 an ounce and Copper ended the day lower by $0.03 to close at $2.58 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat markets, the trend was mixed across the board yet again today: Lean Hogs closed higher by 0.63 at 64.98; Pork Bellies closed the day higher by 0.83 at 91.70; Live Cattle closed higher by 0.30 to end the day at 94.18 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by 0.38 to close at 92.58.
Other Commodities: Corn spiked higher again today by 6.50 today to close at 403.00 and Soybeans moved lower by 8.00 to close at 708.50.
Bonds were higher across the board today: 2 year bond closed higher by 1/32 at 99 25/32; 5 year bond closed higher by 4/32 at 99 16/32; 10 year bond closed higher by 8/32 at 99 1/32 and the 30 year bond closed higher by 11/32 at 94 22/32.
The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 3,060,722. Open Interest for Futures moved higher by 60,368 to close at 8,866,495 and the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 140,146 to close at 7,231,083 for a total Open Interest of 16,097,680 for a total gain on the day by 200,514.
The mini Dow ended the session with a gain of 5 to close at 12635. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 68,417 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. New York Stock Exchange movers for the day: Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings (CME) fell 4.25 points on the day to close at $569.75; AMREP Corporation (AXR) rallied higher by 14.43 points to close at $146.33; Las Vegas Sands Corporation (LVS) gained 4.85 points for a closing price of $108.59; Rio Tinto plc (RTP) fell 5.37 points to end at $201.06 on the day and Bunge Limited (BG) climbed higher by 4.74 points to end the day at $75.87.
On the NASDAQ today, advancers came in at 1,414; decliners totaled 1,643; unchanged came in at 140; new highs came in at 205 and new lows came in at 19, same as yesterday. Gainers and losers for the day on the NASDAQ: Genesis HealthCare Corporation (GHCI) rallied higher by 8.41 points to close at $61.26; Central European Media Enterprises Ltd. (CETV) climbed higher by 4.91 points to end at $81.50; Research In Motion Limited (RIMM) fell 5.52 points to end at $127.40 and The Medicines Company (MDCO) shed 4.02 points to close at $29.73.
