• Axel Hartmann, Germany’s Ambassador to Slovakia, attends official celebration.
First, LANXESS Central Eastern Europe s.r.o. based in the Slovakian capital Bratislava has now been in existence for five years. And second, the sales company has recorded significant growth during this period. Since it was founded in 2008, sales in the five core markets of Poland, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary have climbed by more than 40 percent, from around EUR 220 million to some EUR 306 million last year.
“Over the past five years, we have steadily expanded and improved both our business and our customer relations in the region,” said Rainier van Roessel, member of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG, during the celebrations in Bratislava. “Our innovative technologies and high-performance products for the tire and automotive industries are key growth drivers in this respect. We see further significant potential in these areas. After all, central and eastern Europe have become an important center for the European automotive industry over recent years,” he added.
This year alone, the world’s leading manufacturer of synthetic rubbers expects the tire industry in central and eastern Europe to grow by around 5.5 percent. In addition, the specialty chemicals company forecasts that the automotive industry will see growth of 2 percent this year and an average of around 4 percent between 2014 and 2017.
“LANXESS is one of more than 400 successful German companies in Slovakia and has achieved this success within a short space of time. It is an important part of Germany’s economic commitment to Slovakia and its strong automotive industry,” remarked Axel Hartmann, Germany’s Ambassador to the Slovak Republic.
The specialty chemicals company has also made significant changes to its management team. Wolfgang Heuchel was appointed the new CEO of LANXESS Central Eastern Europe s.r.o. in January this year. The 57-year-old succeeded Flemming B. Bjørnslev, who has been appointed President and CEO of LANXESS Corporation in the United States. And in February this year, Peter Svetík took over from Michael Offermanns as Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
LANXESS in central and eastern Europe
LANXESS has been represented in the markets of Austria, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic since 2008 by its own sales company for central and eastern Europe. LANXESS Central Eastern Europe s.r.o. is headquartered in the Slovakian capital Bratislava. It also has offices in Vienna (Austria), Warsaw (Poland) and Budapest (Hungary).
One of the key areas of operation in the five countries is business with high-performance rubbers and rubber chemicals for the global megatrend of mobility. The company supplies its rubber specialties mainly to national and international tire manufacturers, more and more of whom are expanding their production capacities in central and eastern Europe and increasingly turning to green tires to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Another cornerstone of LANXESS’ business is high-tech plastics, which also serve the future market of green mobility. Premium plastics from LANXESS are paving the way in particular for more economical vehicles in the area of lightweight construction. In spite of their low weight, they are extremely stable and, especially in plastic composites, offer a forward-looking alternative to metal, for example, which is significantly heavier.
Around half of the sales of these products in the region are generated by customers from the automotive and automotive supplier industries. There is also strong demand in central and eastern Europe for inorganic pigments from LANXESS. These are used in the construction industry to color concrete parts, paving stones and roofing tiles.
LANXESS (lanxess.com) is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 9.1 billion in 2012 and roughly 17,200 employees in 31 countries. The company is currently represented at 48 production sites worldwide. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals. LANXESS is a member of the leading sustainability indices Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World and FTSE4Good as well as the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).
