19 Middle & High School Teachers from 5 States Selected for Unique Holocaust Education Program

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Hackensack, NJ, United States, 01/11/2007 - The seminar will take place January 13-15 (Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday weekend) at the Hilton Newark Airport hotel in Elizabeth, N.J.

The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous has selected 19 middle and high school teachers from Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Washington to participate in its 2007 Advanced Seminar, an intensive three-day academic program that explores topics in Holocaust education in-depth.

The Advanced Seminar is a graduate-level program in which a select group of educators who are already well versed in Holocaust studies are given the opportunity to study more focused topics relating to the Holocaust. Through lectures from renowned Holocaust scholars including Debórah Dwork, Robert Jan Van Pelt, Tim Cole, and Radu Ionaid, participants will learn about the progression of the Holocaust in Poland, Italy, the Baltic states, and Romania. They will also discuss how to present the material to their students.

The program is designed for Alfred Lerner Fellows, educators who have already attended the JFR Summer Institute for Teachers, which is held at Columbia University.

“These educators have shown a tremendous commitment to teach the Holocaust in their schools. By attending this high-level program, they will gain an even greater understanding of the Holocaust that will increase their effectiveness in the classroom and enable them to reach other educators who teach this subject,” said JFR Executive Vice President Stanlee Stahl. “The geographical approach we took this year with our program gives educators an opportunity to go more in depth in different countries. While similar occurrences took place, there were intrinsic differences.”

The Foundation also runs an internationally lauded Holocaust education program for middle and high school teachers and Holocaust center personnel that preserves the legacy of rescuers through its national Holocaust teacher education program.
