Since early November, Lahmeyer International has been active in the project by request of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) who is also financing the measure as project owner. As a result of the planned efficiency gains resulting from the increased capacity, the country will save resources and also have more of such resources available for export.

Lahmeyer’s specialists (lahmeyer.de) will prepare technical specifications and evaluate the proposals of the general contractors for the expansion measures. In doing so, both parties will benefit from Lahmeyer’s experience in prior and ongoing projects in Saudi Arabia. Up to now, primarily pure gas turbines or steam power plants have been constructed. After the conversion into combined-cycle power plants the plants’ efficiency rates will increase considerably, with an expected increase in electricity production of approx. 30 % from the same amount of fuel.

The SEC plants to be expanded are located in various regions within the country – some of them are situated around the capital city of Riyadh in the middle of the desert, whereas others are nestled high in the mountains. One plant is located directly at the coast. The tight time schedule requires fast and competent decisions from Lahmeyer’s engineers in order to define the concepts for the individual power plants. Intelligent and creative solutions are needed to meet the demands of the various sites. As the existing plants have been expanded several times already, standard solutions can only be applied in very exceptional cases.
