The RM205 million contract is for the design and construction of the cooling water intake, pumping station and outfall structures and is part of a RM6.5 billion project to increase the power plant’s capacity by an additional 1000MW to 3100MW. Upon completion, Tanjung Bin will become the largest coal-fired plant in South East Asia.
Working in joint venture with Leighton Asia, Murray & Roberts Marine will design and construct the marine infrastructure for the power station cooling system, which comprises a reinforced concrete and steel cooling water intake channel and pump pit and a box culvert cooling water outfall structure which extends 1.65km into the Singapore Strait. The 10 meter long box culverts (400 tonnes each) will be manufactured locally and installed on piles in a dredged channel on the seabed. The contracted scope of work includes the complete design and construction of the piling, dredging, foundations, structures, associated ground treatment and temporary works.
Work on the project has commenced and the project team has begun mobilizing to site. Works are expected to be complete in early November, 2014.

“This project continues our recent success in the Malaysian power sector. We look forward to continuing our association with Tanjung Bin where we designed and built the seawater intake and outfall for the original development” said Geoff Morgan, Murray & Roberts Marine General Manager for South East Asia. “We have again demonstrated the value of our culvert technology, which has proven to be cost-effective and durable at both Tanjung Bin and Manjung power plants, where we are currently completing a similar expansion”.
The Tanjung Bin project will utilize Murray & Roberts Marine’s design and modeling facilities in Cape Town, South Africa.

”This project confirms our position as the leading design-build contractor for cooling water infrastructure for high capacity thermal power stations in South East Asia” said Andrew Fanton, Managing Director of Murray & Roberts Marine. “This will be the fourth such facility we have built in Malaysia. The culvert outfall construction methodology was developed in Cape Town as an alternative to the originally proposed steel pipes for Manjung 1-3. The methodology, which has both cost and programme advantages, encapsulates the core value proposition of Murray & Roberts Marine, which is to provide our clients with cost and time optimal alternative solutions for marine infrastructure” he said. “The project provides further sustainability to our activities in Malaysia where we have maintained a permanent presence since 1995”.
