Today at the Land Warfare Conference in Melbourne Australia, the Minister for Defence Materiel, the Hon Jason Clare MP, signed a Deed to enter Finmeccanica into the Australian Government Global Supply Chain program.

The Deed is an important step in the strategy to grow an enduring Finmeccanica presence in Australia, as discussed by Mr Giuseppe Orsi, CEO and Chairman of Finmeccanica, during his meetings with the Prime Minister of Australia and the Minister for Defence Materiel in April 2012.

The Australian Global Supply Chain Program is restricted to large multinational primes with an ability to help Australian companies access more opportunities through their supply chain. The Finmeccanica Global Supply Chain Deed sets the legal, reporting and overarching obligations on Finmeccanica under this Australian Government funded program, that with the support of the operating companies, will enable development of the specific milestones and actions to identify potential opportunities for Australian companies to compete internationally.

The Deed was signed by Ing Riccardo Napolitano, GM Finmeccanica Group Services S.p.A. and witnessed by H.E. Mr. Gianludovico de Martino di Montegiordano, Italian Ambassador to Australia, the recently appointed Finmeccanica Head of Region for Australasia, Mr Tony Fraser, and Chairman of AgustaWestland Australia, General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (retired).

“The Global Supply Chain Deed with Australia is well suited to the broad range of exceptional technological capabilities of Finmeccanica and I know the Company sees this as mutually very beneficial” said Ing. Riccardo Napolitano. Finmeccanica Operating Companies have recently been awarded contracts or are engaged in the solicitation process, across almost all of our sectors.

“Engaging with Australian small and medium businesses that have a range of quality products and services is important to success of the projects in the demanding Australian environment”, he said.

Finmeccanica companies (finmeccanica.com) have provided equipment to Australia including some for Counter IED for Australian soldiers in Afghanistan, Soldier Personal Radios, night vision systems on route clearance vehicles, radios and communication systems on ships, Air Traffic radars, helicopters to Navy and the civil sector including the AW139 that conducted many rescues side by side with Defence helicopters, MU90 torpedoes, ATR aircraft, and satellite imagery during the tragic Queensland and Victorian floods. In May, the Australian Government announced the purchase of ten Alenia Aermacchi C-27J aircraft through the US FMS system.

Most of the 540 Australian Finmeccanica employees are in the very successful Ansaldo STS in Brisbane and Perth, focussed on high technology transport systems, rail signalling and control and mass transit systems, with the majority of systems being provided into the mining sector.
