NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Bad Vilbel, Germany, 2012/10/30 - DR Congo a Joint Venture of Lahmeyer International and Gopa-Intec lead by Lahmeyer will prepare as a first step a feasibility study for a 220 kV connection between Bukavu and Goma in the region of Lake Kivu in DR Congo.

On behalf of the Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL) of DR Congo a Joint Venture of Lahmeyer International and Gopa-Intec lead by Lahmeyer will prepare as a first step a feasibility study for a 220 kV connection between Bukavu and Goma in the region of Lake Kivu in DR Congo. The project will be implemented within the scope of the interconnection of the power grids with neighboring countries of the NELSAP region. Member states of NELSAP in addition to DR Congo are also Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The JV will be involved in the project from the beginning through completion in 2016. The overall aim of the project is to secure a reliable power supply in this region.

During the 4-year project in DR Congo a new substation will be built at Buhandahanda close to the city of Bukavu. The existing substation in Goma will also be extended. A 220 kV transmission line with a length of 150 km will connect the two substations. The new substation at Bukavu will contribute improving the power supply of the whole region. A new 220 kV line will be routed from Bukavu to the substation Kamanyola to provide power in the border area of Burundi. The grids of DR Congo and Burundi will be connected through a 110 kV transmission line.

The team of experts of the JV will provide support for various tasks. In addition to the feasibility study the team will prepare the tender documents. In addition, they will assist the National Project Implementation Unit (CNEP) as the executing agency during the evaluation of bids and the contract award. Also the approval of the detailed design of the facilities and the construction supervision including factory acceptance tests and commissioning are under the responsibilities of the JV.
