A new study published in The Journal of Educational Research by 3D Group’s Micheline Magnotta and Dale S. Rose found high-risk students outperformed control group students when using arts-based reading instruction. The research-based program developed by Chicago’s childhood literacy non-profit organization, Reading in Motion, provided students from kindergarten through third grade with arts-based reading instruction that integrates phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, and oral reading fluency using small groups and peer-assisted instruction with frequent feedback. Over four years, the 3D Group team tracked the results of the program between a control group and the arts-based reading instruction group. 3D Group found three times as many students read at grade level (60% vs. 19%) by the end of third grade when participating in the Reading in Motion program.

“The comparisons suggest that students whose classrooms had these components far outpaced the end-of-year reading ability of students who did not use Reading in Motion’s methods. Specifically, Reading in Motion students had a greater understanding of word segmentation, letter-sound correspondence and a greater ability to blend letters into words than students who did not have those components,” said Dale Rose, Ph.D., president of 3D Group.
Many studies have shown that low income and minority students are continuing to struggle in our public education system, and the program developed by Reading in Motion and researched by 3D Group appears to provide a path to success in reading. The high risk students who were evaluated in the study were predominately African American and low income, and in the year prior to the study the schools examined had a majority of students reading below grade level. The 3D Group study provides one more step forward for educational policy by demonstrating that arts-based reading programs that integrate research can provide significant gains for even the highest risk populations.
