Based on its recent analysis of the antioxidants market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Phenofarm® with the 2012 Europe New Product Innovation Award for its highly innovative Phenolea® Complex. The product is set to address the European demand for superior, natural antioxidant ingredients.
Phenolea® Complex is derived from olive fruits and is a standardized extract containing molecules which have a high antioxidant capacity. The product is clean label, containing water soluble molecules and is applicable to many food and beverages.
"This novel natural antioxidant ingredient transfers all the perceived advantages of a Mediterranean diet directly to the food products in which it is used," noted Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Dr. Kaushik Ramakrishnan Shankar. "It is E-number free and manufactured using a sustainable process."
The raw material is olive pulp which is in abundant supply in Italy. The local source of olives provides IP protection for Phenolea® Complex, while strict control of the supply chain ensures that there are no demand-supply gaps for the raw material. At the same time, the vegetable source of the antioxidant is an added advantage for food manufacturers who would like to create both vegetarian and vegan formulations.Phenofarm’s success lies in developing an eco-friendly process based on membrane technology. This process does not use solvents, therefore removing the problems of both solvent handling and residues in the final product.
"Membrane technologies are considered state-of-the-art in food ingredient manufacture, and provides advantages of reducing both energy and water consumption," explained Dr. Shankar. "These advantages are passed onto customers who can create superior formulations with a natural antioxidant."
The product is traceable with an ISO 22005/2007 certification. In comparison to other products like ascorbic acid and rosemary extracts, Phenolea® Complex is superior in preventive oxidative rancidity in several food products.
