Dubai will seem a lot quieter after the furore of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) fades this evening, ending its third and most successful year.
The red carpet saw celebrities from around the world: Mos Def, Richard Gere, Oliver Stone, Laurence Fishburne, Joshua Jackson, Robin Tunney, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Ahmed Helmi, Mohammed Khan, Mervat Amine, Leila Eloui, Shah Rukh Khan, Sushma Reddy, Kabir Khan, John Abraham, and Prince Albert II of Monaco.
114 films were screened, many already heavy with honours, such as The Lives of Others and Volver, which won several European Film Awards each, and Babel, which was nominated for seven Golden Globes Awards, along with Hollywoodland, Happy Feet, and The Last King of Scotland.
The festival reported record ticket sales this year, doubling its box office take from 2005, and was a day longer, adding to the enjoyment.
Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of DIFF, stated, “This year was superlative. We have come so far in such a short time, and will redouble our efforts for 2007, so that we can continue to attract visitors from around the world in a celebration of cinema, which rises above culture, language and politics to be a celebration of our common human experience.”
In 2004, a new festival joined the ranks of the world’s international film festivals. Using the powerful medium of film to serve as a platform for inter-cultural dialogue and an instrument of global understanding, the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) launched with its theme of ‘Bridging Cultures. Meeting Minds.’
DIFF showcases a wide selection of features, shorts and documentaries, from around the world, reflecting Dubai’s cosmopolitan and multi-cultural character. The festival further seeks to celebrate excellence in Arab and world cinema by screening a repertoire of critically acclaimed and award winning films.
