National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at NIH will give a plenary keynote presentation on “Catalyzing Innovation: The NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences” at the 8th Modern Drug Discovery & Development Summit taking place on October 24-26, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA

The National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) is a newly formed center within the National Institutes of Health. It was created by merging existing programs and several new initiatives into a new center. This new center now has two main divisions: the Division of Preclinical Innovation and the Division of Clinical Innovation. In his presentation, Dr. McKew will give an overview of the new center and highlight the translational research programs contained within.

Benefits of his presentation include:
• Better understanding of the role the NIH and NCATS play in developing novel public private partnerships for therapeutic development
• Understanding of the existing and newly developed preclinical development initiatives NCATS has announced along with their solicitation timelines.
• Examples of successful collaborative projects from the Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) and Bridging Interventional Development Gaps (BrIDGs) program portfolios.

Dr. McKew’s responsibilities include developing the Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Disease (TRND) program and the Bridging Interventional Development Gaps program (BrIDGs; former NIH-RAID program). Both of these programs focus on novel public/private partnerships to advance collaborative drug discovery projects through pre-clinical development into early clinical development. Prior to joining the NIH, Dr. McKew held a Director level position at Wyeth Research and began his career at the Genetics Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he spent a total of 17 years. His research interests include rare and neglected disease research, medicinal chemistry, synthetic methodology, and tool compounds to probe biology. These interests have resulted in >20 publications, 10 Granted US Patents and multiple podium presentations. Dr. McKew also enjoys sharing his passion for science with others. This has prompted him to become course director and lecturer in GMS PM 881 “Drug Discovery and Development” a graduate level course in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics which resulted in his appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor Boston University School of Medicine.

GTC's 8th Modern Drug Discovery and Development Summit features a plenary keynote session followed by five parallel tracks:
• 9th Stem Cell Research and Therapeutics Conference;
• 7th Assay and Drug Discovery Technologies Conference;
• 4th Translational Medicine Conference;
• 3rd Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Conference;
• Biotechnology Transfer and Commercialization Conference.
