A workshop designed to help companies demonstrate their green credentials is proving popular with businesses working in the landscape industries. Over the last few weeks, around 15% of attendees signing up for the training have come from this sector, providing these companies with a greater understanding of environmental risks and how to mitigate them.

The half day STEM (Steps To Environmental Management) workshop, delivered by Remade South East, is free of charge to SMEs across the south east thanks to a European Regional Development Fund sponsored project devised by Kent County Council. The workshop leads to a recognised environmental management system (EMS) certificate - STEM Blue - and fulfils the first levels of the internationally recognised ISO14001 standard in environmental management. Organisations obtaining their STEM Blue certificate demonstrate their commitment to environmental improvement.

An EMS, including an Environmental Policy, is seen as a measure of a company’s professionalism by its clients, prospects and customers. Defra and the Environment Agency have reports that show that businesses with an EMS in place benefit from cost savings in their operations as well as increased tendering opportunities.

Jeremy Sacha of Sacha Barnes Limited, an Oxford Landscape Planning Business that attended the Remade run STEM course at Henmans, Oxford in July this year said: 'it was the best training event ever!'

Claire Thirlwall of Thirlwall Associates, a Chartered Landscape Architecture practice said: ‘I was really impressed, it made me look at extra aspects that I hadn’t considered including innovation and ethics.’

Diana Lock, Remade South East’s CEO, remarked: “The STEM workshop is useful to any business, but it appears that SMEs working in the landscape industries are finding it particularly helpful. We believe this is because clients of landscapers are showing increased awareness of the environmental aspects of their projects and favour businesses that can demonstrate they have an EMS.”

More STEM courses are being delivered by Remade South East over the next two months at venues around the South East. For a list of the workshops and details of how to book your place, go to Remade's event page on its website.

STEM was developed through the Low Carbon Futures Project which is part funded by Kent County Council and the South East European Regional Development Fund Competitiveness Programme 2007 – 2013. For more information about the project and STEM, please visit sustainable business section of Kent County Council's website.

Around 100 small to medium sized companies will benefit from the current STEM training from Remade before the end of Q3 2012.

Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) report outline is available of its website.

About Remade South East
Remade South East (remade-southeast.co.uk) provides consultancy support to private businesses in the construction and waste sectors as well as working closely with public bodies including local authorities, Government offices and organisations such as the NHS. Remade is a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee with a Board of Non-Executive Directors and a Steering Group made up of representatives from the public and private sectors from across the South East region. Remade's operational team comprises highly skilled members that manage a high profile portfolio of projects. Its principal aim is to expand waste market development activities; by increasing material reuse and recycling across the South East, Remade is reducing the volume of 'waste' materials going to landfill and thus lowering CO2 emissions by increasing recycling rates.

The company is a preferred adviser on waste by SGS, one of the World's leading quality assessment organisations. It is also providing support for Kent County Council's STEM (Steps To Environmental Management) scheme. In addition, Remade South East runs projects funded directly with European environmental funds. These programmes deliver a number of innovative projects which also divert high levels of waste away from landfill and generate new economic activities.
