Dubai, UAE, United Arab Emirates, 2006/12/14 - Stars speak at a press conference for the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) opening film, Bobby.
Stars Laurence Fishburne and Joshua Jackson were in attendance, along with actress Joy Bryant (Get Rich or Die Tryin,’ 2005) and Nick Cannon (Underclassman, 2005), at a press conference for the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) opening film, Bobby.
Laurence Fishburne stated that Kennedy represented the side of the “American personality that really tries to promote what is best inside of people. Our hope in making this film is to remind people to make room for that part of ourselves to come to the forefront. This film is a step in the right direction.”
Joy Bryant said, “the film is a call to arms to bring back the kind of idealism that existed when Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King were alive. It seems that America has been swimming in a pool of cynicism for the last 30 or 40 years, and it’s time for it to stop.”
Gary Michael Walters, one of the film’s producers, said: “Bobby started as a movie and became a movement. It seemed to all of us that a lot of the issues the film dealt with had not been resolved in the intervening years.”
He related the film’s message to DIFF’s mandate of bridging cultures, and stated, “whenever an individual stands up against the forces of darkness, they become a target. We have to collectively, through cinema or politics or speaking up, keep the message alive.”
Bobby is the centerpiece film of the Operation Cultural Bridges Programming segment, which aims to create a platform for intercultural dialogue and reconciliation through the powerful medium of cinema.
The film centres around the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, and is set against the backdrop of the political issues gripping the United States at the time, including race relations--Kennedy’s assassination came two months after Martin Luther King’s.
The film will screen on December 10 at 8:00 pm at the Madinat Arena, in the presence of their Highnesses Prince Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum and Prince Albert the Second of Monaco, as well as a host of celebrities from Hollywood, Bollywood and the Arab world.
