The Chernobyl Tissue Bank (CTB) is an international cooperation that collects, stores and disseminates samples of blood and tissue from patients with thyroid tumours who live in the areas of Ukraine and Russia that were contaminated by fallout from the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

he main objective of the CTB is to provide a research resource for both ongoing and future studies of the health consequences of the Chernobyl accident and it exists to promote collaborative research on a limited biological resource.

The project is coordinated from the Imperial College by Professor Thomas and the CTB secretariat. PathXL (pathxl.com) is delighted to provide both the CTB and the Imperial College Healthcare Tissue Bank (ICHTB) with its virtual microscopy plug-in. PathXL’s digital pathology plug-in can be easily integrated to existing biobank solutions thereby enhancing their functionality and efficiency. For instance, when researchers need access to tissue samples which exhibit rare conditions or are in high demand for studies, such that they have already been exhausted, they can still access the valuable information held in the permanent virtual slides, together with all the valuable associated metadata.

Integrating PathXL’s digital pathology plug-in enables researchers applying for access to samples, to review the tissue pathology/biomarker status, prior to retrieval. This ensures they are requesting the correct samples with the correct pathology and the correct biomarker status for their specific research project.

Philip Murray, Executive Vice President of PathXL, stated
“PathXL is proud to be associated with one of the key resources helping the international community learn from, and repair, some of the human damage from the Chernobyl nuclear accident.”

Digital Pathology has a number of key advantages in biobanking:

• A Permanent Searchable Archive of Tissue Sample Histopathology - digital pathology images as an integral part of the biobank data repository, adds enormous value to the biobank allowing for future review and evaluation of tissue pathology.

• Digital Slide Annotation - digital pathology allows images to be digitally annotated and marked by a pathologist to highlight key tissue compartments and areas of diagnostic interest. For instance, for tissue microarray construction, digital slides can be annotated to highlight specific locations from which to retrieve cores.

• Pathological Review - Digital pathology and scanning of the samples allows a permanent record of the tissue pathology to be stored for later pathological review. Since the images can be viewed remotely, on-line, this allows pathological review and annotation to be undertaken by pathologists anywhere in the world, at any time.

• Biomarker Evaluation - Many biobanks currently store information on important tissue biomarkers and their subjective interpretative score, as determined by pathologists. Storing digital slides of immunohistochemical (IHC) biomarkers add to the value of a tissue biobank, as they help to better characterise the samples for subsequent retrieval and analysis.

• Sample Retrieval - Having a digital record of the tissue pathology images and associated biomarker expression within a biobank allows for very specific selection of samples from the archive for novel research. Sample images can be reviewed from anywhere in the world allowing for biobanks to operate and provide samples across large geographies.
