Battery technology has almost reached its upward limit of performance capability and may not be in a position to meet the demands of "power hungry" devices such as cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, camcorders, personal digital assistants and military applications. Portable fuel cells such as DMFCs have been proposed by the consumer electronic industry and researchers to meet the energy needs unmet by conventional batteries.

Though the development of DMFCs have been constrained by high costs, complex designs and fuel problems, the enthusiasm shown by researchers and companies will likely present innovative solutions to solve the inherent problems in the application of these fuel cells in portable devices.

Highlights of this briefing include innovations from leading companies in DMFCs, technology trends, technology drivers and challenges and a road map for the adoption of applications for DMFCs.

This briefing would benefit the DMFC manufacturers, consumer electronic manufacturers and component manufacturers. The briefing discusses the major innovations from leading companies and research institutions, technology trends and competing technologies, which includes both battery as well as fuel cell technologies such as PEM fuel cells and others.

“The pace of adoption of DMFCs in various applications would depend on how capable the DMFCs are in terms of its cost and its overall efficiency compared to its competing conventional technologies as well as competing fuel cell technologies such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells, formic acid fuel cells and direct borohydride fuel cells. In addition, the regulations governing the use of methanol in passenger aircrafts would play a pivotal role in the widespread use of DMFCs,” notes Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Viswanathan Krishnan.
