Advances in Piezoelectric Materials and Devices Drive Novel Applications
Advances in Piezoelectric Materials and Devices Drive Novel Applications

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Palo Alto, CA, United States, 12/12/2006 - Frost & Sullivan finds that emerging technology developments in piezoelectric materials and devices will drive applications that are currently spread over a broad range of sectors such as military, automotive, commercial, medical and consumer.

One key obstacle that material manufacturers face while developing piezoelectric materials is the non-availability of piezoelectric material application information. Manufacturers find it increasingly difficult to develop materials when they do not have enough information about the devices that require the material. Material researchers and manufacturers do not have the sources and knowledge to foresee potential material applications. A number of key participants opine that combining their advanced materials with knowledge of the application devices would benefit the material manufacturers as well as the device manufacturers.

Frost & Sullivan finds that emerging technology developments in piezoelectric materials and devices will drive applications that are currently spread over a broad range of sectors such as military, automotive, commercial, medical and consumer.

If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides manufacturers, end users, and other industry participants with an overview of the latest analysis of the Emerging Technology Developments in Piezoelectric Materials, then send an e-mail to Trisha Bradley, Corporate Communications, at trisha.bradley[.]frost.com with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by e-mail.

“The growing demands for sophisticated, portable, miniaturized devices with long battery lifetimes have favored the use of tiny power-efficient piezo-solutions”, notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Archana Jayarajah. “Piezoelectric solutions can now replace heavy and possibly bulkier electromagnetic solutions.”

New piezoelectric fiber-based energy harvesters provide an answer to this problem as they can obviate the need for batteries or recharge the batteries, thereby increasing their life in the WSNs. Piezoelectric devices are extremely attractive in this area due to their thin form factor and ability, when packaged robustly, to harvest energy in extreme environments.

While the EU directive lists that piezoelectric devices are exempt from the legislation, they will be reviewed regularly to discover if technical obstacles to their substitution have been overcome.

“Lead has been associated with a number of mental and physical side effects such as birth defects and mental retardation, and has been restricted in a number of products. Restrictive measures such as lead-free requirements for piezoceramics, could cause restraints on technology development in this sector,” explains Jayarajah. “Every manufacturer of piezoelectric products will, in the short or medium term, have to seek a new orientation or find a niche”

Environmental concern over the use of lead-based PZT materials drives the development of suitable lead-free alternatives. Lead-free piezoceramics are bound to become increasingly important, first in Japan and Europe, and over a longer term, also in the United States. However, another point that must be mentioned at this juncture is that currently, a number of the suggested alternatives to PZT contain other heavy metals and hence the quest for a lead free alternative still continues.
