EMP’s representation accounted for nearly 10% of all attendees at the meeting, which drew just over 500 people this year. Because of the large attendance number, EMP received a special recognition by ACEP President Dr. David Seaberg and senior ACEP staff for the work done to support physicians to be more politically active. Accompanying this year’s attendees were: L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP, Director of Health Policy & Legislative Advocacy; Jeremy Simonsen, MD, FAAEM, ED Medical Director at Carolinas Medical Center – Mercy in Charlotte, NC; and, Juliet La Mers, MD, MPH, FACEP, Assistant ED Director, EMS Director and QI Director at Marshal Medical Center in Placerville, CA. A kick-off event for the Scholars was hosted by Steven Rudis, MD, Director of Staffing and Retention – EMP’s Nationwide Firefighters Program, Interim ED Medical Director of Memorial Hospital in York, PA and EMP Medical Group Board member.

During the conference, attendees heard a presentation by Marilyn Tavenner, Acting Director of CMS. In addition, Scholars were able to visit Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and their staffs. A variety of topics were discussed during these visits, including the Medicare physician payment system; medical liability reform; the repeal of the Independent Payment Advisory Board; budget shortfalls leading states to limit Medicaid beneficiaries ED access; and legislation to prohibit the sale of synthetic drugs and proposals to help ameliorate drug shortages.

The EMP Scholars donated a combined $28,000 to the National Emergency Medicine Political Action Committee (NEMPAC), which is sponsored by ACEP. The contribution was given special recognition by Dr. Seaberg.

EMP (emp.com) was founded in 1992 with a vision to provide better healthcare and better healthcare management. Today, EMP treats approximately 3 million patients per year in 60 hospitals nationwide.
