The markets were in a general tight trading pattern through out the session ahead of the FOMC decision on interest rates tomorrow. We are also facing the pre-Christmas holiday shopping which tends to interfere with market conditions.
Here is how the major indices ended the day: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) gained 20.99 points to close at 12328.48; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) tacked on 22.50 points to end the day at 9064.69; the NASDAQ climbed higher by just 5.50 points to close at 2442.86; the S&P 500 (Standard & Poor’s 500 Index) gained 3.20 on the day to end at 1413.04 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved higher by 0.51 points to close at 793.07. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the worlds investable market capitalization) moved higher by 0.94 to close at 236.33 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 moved higher by 18.55 points to close at 5870.31.
Economic data released for the day:
Wholesale Trade: The dollar value of sales made and inventories held by merchant wholesalers is a measurement referred to as, wholesale trade. For October, Inventories month over month change came in at 0.8%.
On the commodities markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Light crude moved lower by $0.81 to close at $61.22 a barrel; Heating Oil closed lower by $0.03 to end the day at $1.72 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower by $0.10 to end the day at $7.58 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas closed lower by $0.02 to end the day at $1.60 a gallon.
Metals ended the session higher across the board today: Gold moved higher by $3.80 to close at $634.80 an ounce; Silver closed higher by $0.13 at $14.03 an ounce; Platinum moved much higher by $1.40 to close at $1,109.20 an ounce and Copper ended the day higher by $0.02 to close at $3.13 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Lean Hogs closed with lower by 0.78 to end the day at 63.50; Pork Bellies closed lower by 0.50 to end the day at 90.55; Live Cattle closed lower by 0.63 to end the day at 89.10 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by 0.80 to close at 99.63.
Other Commodities: Corn moved higher by 2.25 today to close at 370.75 and Soybeans moved nicely higher by 10.75 to close at 666.75.
Bonds were mostly higher across the board today: 2 year Bond closed with no change at 99 29/32; 5 year bond moved higher by 4/32 to close at 100; 10 year bond closed higher by 7/32 at 100 26/32 and the 30 year bond closed higher by 14/32 at 97 31/32.
The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 4,420,208. Open Interest for Futures moved lower by 131,435 to close at 8,729,366 and the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 110,744 to close at 6,482,752 for a total Open Interest of 15,212,118 for a total loss on the day by 20,691. The mini Dow ended the session with a gain of 34 to close at 12430. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 163,253 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. New York Stock Exchange movers for the day: Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings (CME) fell 3.00 points to close at $543.14; Arizona Land Income Corporation (AZL) fell 3.50 points to end at $11.51 on the day; Greif Incorporated (GEF) fell 2.87 points to close at $109.74; AMREP Corporation (AXR) rallied higher by 15.22 points to close at $118.23 for the day and Intercontinental Exchange Incorporated (ICE) gained 5.11 points to close at $113.21.
On the NASDAQ today, advancers came in at 1,546; decliners totaled 1,506; unchanged came in at 168; new highs came in at 98 and new lows came in at 23. Gainers and losers for the day on the NASDAQ:
Global Sources Ltd. (GSOL) gained 2.30 points on the day to close at $16.30; Nuvelo Incorporated (NUVO) plummeted 15.43 points to close at $4.13 at the close; New River Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NRPH) picked up 6.39 points to close at $57.90 on the day and NutriSystem Incorporated (NTRI) fell sharply by 6.01 points to close at $67.59 on the day.
