The American Geophysical Union, the world’s leading society of Earth and space science, and Wiley-Blackwell, the scientific, medical, technical and scholarly business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (NYSE: JWa and JWb), a global provider of content and content-enabled services in research, professional development, and education, announced today that the AGU has selected Wiley-Blackwell as its publishing partner for its portfolio of journals and books. The new partnership will be effective January 2013, subject to completion of a publishing agreement in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding signed last week.

The AGU, a scientific society with a membership of more than 60,000 Earth and space scientists worldwide, publishes 17 journals for the global research community and an extensive book program in Earth and space science under the Geopress imprint.

“We are delighted that AGU has selected Wiley-Blackwell as their publishing partner. Wiley-Blackwell and AGU are developing an extraordinary partnership that will emphasize strategic development, provide flexible and innovative delivery solutions, and expand access and discoverability of AGU’s Earth and space science publications,” said Stephen M. Smith, Wiley’s President and Chief Executive Officer. He continued,“This partnership offers a rare opportunity to create a powerful resource for Earth and space science researchers and professionals by combining Wiley-Blackwell’s publishing experience and vision, powerful digital platform, and wide global reach with AGU’s high quality content, editorial strength, brand reputation, and extensive author base and membership.”

”AGU is very pleased and excited to enter into this partnership with Wiley-Blackwell,” said Michael J. McPhaden, President. “We have thoroughly considered how best to transform AGU’s publishing program to better serve the scientific community as well as position the program for the future. Wiley-Blackwell’s commitment to partnering with scientific societies and cultural fit with AGU based on shared organizational values and strategic priorities promise to make this a powerful partnership.”

Subject to the finalization of the agreement, Wiley-Blackwell will assume responsibility for AGU’s journal publishing activities in January 2013, collaborating closely on new product and delivery models, subscription fulfillment, production, content management, sales and marketing, and distribution. AGU will retain control and ownership of all its journals and the scientific aspects of publishing including editorial control and oversight by AGU governance. A separate agreement is being negotiated for partnership on AGU’s book publishing program. Both will help to support AGU’s wide array of member services and programs to advance scholarly communication.
