From November 15th to 19th will take place the second edition of the race of solar-powered vehicles known as “Atacama Solar Challenge”. It will cross the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, receiving the highest solar radiation on the Earth's surface that reaches more than 1.100 W/m² and exceeds 3.600 meters above sea level.

It is a unique competition in Latin America, the first of its kind, where teams from across the region gather in northern Chile to run 1000 Km. under the relentless sun of a wasteland with innovative solar vehicles for four days of grueling competition

The tour consists of four stages starting from Humberstone to Calama, where begins the second stage to Toconao and San Pedro de Atacama, then to come back to Calama and to make way for the third stage with destiny in Baquedano addressing the final stage from Carmen Alto coming back to Humberstone for the finish line.

The Mathaios team, from San Mateo Institute of Technology, consists of 25 people, mainly students of robotics group advised by a multidisciplinary team of professors and engineers who aim to build and pilot a solar vehicle driven by photovoltaic and mechanical energy. It is the only prototype developed by students from public school enrolled in competition. The rest are private and groups from professional institutes and universities.

This team, sponsored by Eurener, uses as a power generator for its vehicle polycrystalline photovoltaic modules from the European manufacturer specially designed for this application. Eurener modules have the most prestigious certificates of electrical safety and quality as well as independent testing such as the Photon Laboratory attesting that they have values that are above average.

The event is presented as an opportunity for research, development and innovation in renewable energies in Latin America enabling the participation of students, encouraging ingenuity and ensuring replicability of developments in the Latin American reality. Thus, through an activity of great media coverage and supported by actions aimed at the younger generation, it seeks to convey a message to create global awareness regarding the use of renewable energy sources in general and solar energy in particular.
