LANXESS is participating in this year's Wolfsburg Industry Forum. Its exhibition there will center on high-tech chemical products and technologies for "green mobility". “We want to present ourselves to the top representatives of the international automotive industry as an expert development partner for sustainable, pioneering mobility concepts. Among our areas of focus here are high-performance rubber for fuel-saving, low-rolling-resistance tires, lightweight concepts for bodywork and safety components and products for manufacturing durable and lightweight leather for car seats,” said Hartwig Meier, the head of global product and applications development in the High Performance Materials business unit. Mr. Meier is also one of the experts participating in a panel discussion entitled “Managing innovation: Global supplier network as a success factor?” taking place at 4 pm. on June 13, 2012.

Climate-friendly tire rubber
LANXESS has its own stand at the Industry Forum. One key focus of the exhibition will be low-rolling-resistance green tires that contain the specialty chemicals company's high-performance rubber in the tread and carcass among other parts. “We would like to show what opportunities our rubber offers in the development of such fuel-saving and thus climate-friendly tires. Anyone can determine the extent to which low-rolling-resistance tires already benefit both the environment and their wallet by using the free fuel-saving app that we are presenting in Wolfsburg,” said LANXESS rubber expert Christoph Kalla.

Effective lightweight construction using material composites
An additional focal point of the exhibition is lightweight construction based on plastics. Exhibits include a front-end made with plastic-metal composite technology – also known as hybrid technology. “We want to use this to demonstrate just how much weight can be saved through lightweight construction with polyamide together with steel or aluminum sheet. Past projects have led to the design of series-produced hybrid components that were up to 50 percent lighter than their predecessors,” said Meier. Even more weight can be saved by using lightweight nylon composite sheet instead of steel. On display is a brake pedal produced with nylon composite sheet hybrid technology that is 50 percent lighter than comparable conventional brake pedals made of steel, but has the same mechanical strength.

With this and other hybrid concepts, the High Performance Materials (HPM) business unit, previously known as the Semi-Crystalline Products business unit, is driving forward innovation in lightweight automotive construction. It is among the world’s leading suppliers of high-tech polyamides and polybutylene terephthalates (Durethan and Pocan respectively) for the automotive and electrical and electronics sectors and other industries of the future.

Participation in further Volkswagen industry forums
This year, LANXESS will participate in a number of other industry forums organized by Volkswagen in Wolfsburg such as the International Automotive Congress – Argentina and Brazil on October 9 and the 7th International Suppliers Fair (IZB), Europe's top fair for automotive suppliers, taking place on October 10 - 12. LANXESS' focus at these events will also be on green mobility solutions with a specific focus on sustainable mobility for South America.

This year, green mobility is a core strategic topic at LANXESS. For more information, go to green-mobility.com/.
