Prior to partnering with Synygy, the retailer utilized a homegrown mainframe application and several desktop workarounds to manage the tens of thousands of item-level commission rates on daily sales transactions, which neared two million transactions per day during peak sales seasons. These inflexible systems stifled attempts to improve sales performance because:
• commissions could not be easily altered to reflect decreased margins on marked down products;
• commissions could not be easily increased to incent the sale of bundled or add-on products;
• processing was limited to a weekly timeframe, which left little time for associates to change their selling behaviors;
there was no automated method for associates to dispute the details of a transaction.
