Energetics developed metrics, designed surveys, and analyzed expert input for a November 2011 IEA workshop, as well as helped capture and present the workshop outcomes in the newly released IEA report Workshop on Developing Metrics and Assessing Progress Towards a Clean Energy Economy.

During the workshop, leaders from business, industry, research institutes, and government assessed the progress made in eight clean energy technology areas that are deemed to be among the most impactful in terms of greenhouse gas emissions reductions potential. The stakeholders then compared the progress against IEA BLUE Map scenario goals. Energetics’ surveys were used to collect structured input from the experts regarding metrics for measuring and monitoring progress, barriers to progress, and recommendations for improving international collaboration on clean energy technology research and development.

Energetics analyzed the completed surveys and other expert input from the workshop and presented the results in tables, charts, and supporting text in the report. The team also designed a framework for classifying clean energy metrics and populated the framework with candidate metrics for 14 technology areas. The workshop report, co-authored by Energetics, is intended to inform the ongoing work of the IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology and the IEA Secretariat.

Energetics’ support (energetics.com) was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy in its role as co-chair of the IEA Experts Group on Research and Development Priority Setting and Evaluation (EGRD). IEA is an energy forum comprising 28 member governments that works to ensure access to reliable, affordable, and clean energy, as well as coordinate a joint response to oil supply emergencies. EGRD was created to advance analytical methods of energy technology analysis, the determination of research and development priorities, and the evaluation of benefits from research and development endeavors.
