The water and wastewater treatment (WWWT) equipment market is gradually recouping from the economic downturn, with expected revenues of US$669.4 million in 2012, which is a substantial improvement on the US$566.2 in 2010. The credit for this upturn in fortunes goes to the revival of the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry in Asia Pacific, as it holds huge potential for related support system markets, which include the WWWT equipment market.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (environmental.frost.com), Water and Wastewater Treatment Solutions in Electrical and Electronics Industry, finds that the market earned revenues of US$566.2 million in 2010 and estimates this to reach US$906.4 million in 2015.

Asia Pacific’s rapid manufacturing growth, especially in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, and the revitalizing of its E&E devices industry has raised the demand for quality WWWT equipment. Singapore and Taiwan are likely to witness modestly high growth in the WWWT equipment market due to consistent demand from their E&E industries, while Japan and South Korea remain E&E powerhouses in the Asia Pacific.

There is a marked movement toward high value and technologically advanced E&E component production in the Asia Pacific. Simultaneously, there is also heightened demand for advanced, energy-efficient WWWT equipment with membranes, filtration parts, and improved functions. This is because water purification is crucial in the production of most electronics components.

"As E&E applications continue to expand in many sectors, including agricultural applications, suitable WWWT equipment is essential," says Frost & Sullivan Research Manager Melvin Leong. "Leading market participants in water and wastewater treatment technologies are introducing new treatment solutions for E&E manufacturers, as well as expanding aggressively within the Asia Pacific."

Further, as high technicalities are involved in treatment of water and wastewater, end users prefer reputed equipment manufacturers for their WWWT needs. The WWWT equipment market in the E&E industry in Asia Pacific is populated by major international manufacturers, as well as other manufacturers of support systems such as disinfection and oxidation. Owing to the intense competition and inherent price sensitivity of end users, the market shares of the top-rung participants in this market have reduced.

The fallout of the WWWT equipment market’s dependence on the E&E industry is that it will feel the ripples of any disturbance in the end-user market. It is also influenced by the general economic environment in most countries in the Asia Pacific.

WWWTE companies also have to strategize for issues such as minimal compliance and high project investments. In the past, many end users were lax in complying with regulations due to cost constraints. However, this issue is a thing of the past, as costs have reduced up to 15 percent, depending on the types of equipment and process.

Further, regulatory bodies have tightened their approval process and have made it mandatory for most medium-income and all high-income economies such as Singapore, Japan, and South Korea to meet a specified level of quality of discharged water.

"Meanwhile, the recent economic recession reduced manufacturing capacity and expansion of the E&E industry, compelling market participants to focus on businesses outside Asia Pacific," notes Leong. "Apart from reprioritizing business targets, companies can also enhance sales by producing disinfection systems that promote cost savings and environmental sustainability."
