The yearly Summit Competition recognizes technical communications that demonstrate excellence in all facets of writing, editing, and design.

Energetics' highly qualified team of engineers, technical writers, communications specialists, and graphic designers collaborated with technical staff from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition, and the Propane Education & Research Council to create these three outstanding documents, which earned Excellence and Merit awards.

Foundations for Innovation: Photovoltaic Technologies for the 21st Century
Award of Excellence

Energetics partnered with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to prepare this report, which outlines a set of opportunities and “grand” technology and measurement challenges that must be addressed to ensure the widespread commercialization of photovoltaic (PV) technologies. The team synthesized diverse inputs from more than 80 experts into focused, accessible text appropriate for high-level decision makers. Judges commended this “super publication,” which “works well” when read in depth or when quickly scanned. The report is now being used to identify key research areas for solar PV, guide future research decisions in the public and private sectors, and address issues that are critical to making the United States a leader in the field and a major producer and exporter of state-of-the-art solar technology.

Energetics worked with the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition to produce this report, which describes a proposed path forward for Smart Manufacturing techniques to significantly increase productivity and reduce manufacturing costs through energy savings and material costs. Energetics gathered input from a national cross-section of industry leaders, vendors, and academic researchers and then edited the material to reflect a single voice and style. The team organized the material into short, well-constructed chapters that use bolding, sidebars, and tables and figures to enhance readability and clarify complex concepts. Judges commented on the “superior quality” of the printed report and noted that information in the report would be “valuable to policy makers.” The report is currently being used to guide future research decisions in the public and private sectors.

Propane-Fueled Combined Heat and Power at the Kauai Marriott
Award of Merit

Energetics teamed with the Propane Education & Research Council and the Gas Technology Institute to prepare this four-page case study, which summarizes the performance of a propane-fueled combined heat and power system during a field demonstration at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club. The team distilled 18 months of performance data into summary tables; charts; and short, scannable sections of text that showcase the system’s performance and benefits for diverse audiences, including financial decision makers, operations managers, and members of the propane industry. Judges praised the document’s “lucid explanations and audience/purpose-appropriate content,” which is presented in “right-sized chunks.”

These three documents are the most recent Energetics publications to be honored for communications excellence. Since 2006, a total of 26 Energetics publications have received regional or international communications awards from the STC.
