They will allow Turkey to face strong domestic consumption and answer the high international demand for Turkish steel products.

Within this context, GE Energy’s (NYSE: GE) Power Conversion business, was recently awarded a significant contract for the supply of electrical and automation equipment for Posco Assan TST’s new Cold Rolling Mill facility in Turkey. GE’s expertise in metals processes was the key factor for entering this country. This order furthermore increases the group’s presence in the metals segment in Turkey, the second largest steel producing country in Europe.

Posco Assan TST, a joint venture between Turkey’s Kibar Holding and South Korean companies Daewoo and Posco, will build a new stainless steel mill plant in Turkey’s Izmit province. This plant aims to meet 40 percent of Turkey’s demand for stainless steel.

Based on its in-depth knowledge of advanced process controls, Power Conversion has been selected by Fives DMS, a worldwide leading mechanical company, to supply electrical and automation equipment for two new 64-inch Sendzimir Cold Rolling Mills for this facility. GE will provide in-house manufactured induction motors fed by Power Conversion MV7000 Medium Voltage drives, low voltage drives and Level 1 automation process, including thickness, flatness and tension controls. GE’s scope also will include supervision of erection, commissioning and personnel training.

The mills are scheduled to enter into the production phase during the first half of 2013 and will have a capacity of 200,000 tons per year. They will be dedicated to roll hot rolled coils for the production of ferritic stainless steel materials. In a second step, the production capacity of the plant could gradually increase to 400,000 tons per year.

In addition to this contract, Power Conversion recently won another order for electrical equipment for hot rolling mills in Turkey, underpinning its excellent reputation as a supplier of electrical equipment for steelworks and rolling mills in Turkey.

GE has developed a complete set of equipment and functions to help optimize the metals processes, including advanced process control and automation systems such as automatic gauge control (AGC) and automatic flatness control (AFC) for cold rolling mills.

More than 150 projects have been executed by GE Energy’s Power Conversion business around the world during the last five years, including iron and steel making, cold and hot rolling mills, processing lines, etc.

GE Energy’s Power Conversion business is a leading supplier for the metals, mining, material handling and test bench industries for the most advanced and innovative electrical solutions combining motors, variable speed drives and automation and process control. GE’s strong familiarity with customers’ processes allows the development of tailored automation solutions to achieve unique performances like one of the fastest tinning process, some of the deepest hoist mine winders, advanced container cranes, the latest generation of super-heavy-lift cranes for offshore wind turbine installation or one of the largest wind turbine test benches.
