SaskTel today announced that it has deployed a new 4G antenna in Melfort and will soon deploy two more antennas in La Ronge and Air Ronge. The antennas, installed on 60-70 foot wood monopoles, extend 4G coverage and increase capacity. The La Ronge and Air Ronge sites are tentatively scheduled to be in service in mid-February.
SaskTel has also deployed a Cellular On Wheels (COW) temporary site in Weyburn, and will deploy a larger Tower On Wheels (TOW) in Meadow Lake in mid-February. SaskTel has recently added an additional carrier in White City to provide additional 4G capacity. And over the past few weeks, SaskTel has continued to optimize 4G antennas in several communities including Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to provide the maximum coverage and capacity from existing 4G sites.
SaskTel has also added three new permanent 4G tower locations:
• Alvena: provides coverage to the village of Alvena and the surrounding area including highway 41 between Aberdeen and Wakaw.
• Buchanan: provides coverage to the village of Buchanan and the surrounding area including highways 5 and 47 west of Canora.
• Limerick: provides coverage to the village of Limerick and the surrounding area including highway 13 west of Assiniboia.
With the engineering enhancements that SaskTel has completed over the past several months, including high capacity equipment installations, software upgrades, network optimization and adding radio spectrum, SaskTel has provided an approximate 50% overall capacity improvement for customers. Call drops have been reduced to under 1%, with call completions at 98%. While wireless technology will never be 100% reliable, SaskTel continues to improve the 4G network.
"SaskTel has deployed a mix of engineering solutions that is improving the 4G customer experience in concrete ways across the province," said Ron Styles, SaskTel President and CEO. "Customers can expect a sustained effort to continually expand and improve the SaskTel 4G network throughout 2012."
