It appears that the beautiful weather in the North East took its tool on the markets today. Possible many traders took advantage of the plentiful sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures to get out and enjoy one of the possibly few nice days left for the year. Light trading volume accompanied with very tight trading ranges made for a very tough day to trade the markets. Here is how the major indices ended the week: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) struggled to maintain positive territory but gained 5.69 points into the close at 12108.43; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) succeeded in a gain of 14.25 points to close at 8827.98; the NASDAQ moved higher by 13.71 points to end the session at 2389.72; the S&P 500 (Standard & Poor’s 500 Index) gained 1.28 points to close at 1379.61 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved higher by a flat 6 points to end the week at 768.06. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the worlds investable market capitalization) moved lower by 0.06 to close at 229.77 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 moved higher by 8.65 points to close at 5739.19.

On the commodities markets, the trend was mixed across the board today: Light crude fell by $1.57 to close at $59.59 a barrel; Brent Crude ended the day on Thursday with a gain of $1.73 to close at $61.32 a barrel; Heating Oil closed lower by $0.05 to close at $1.70 a gallon; Natural Gas ended the day lower by $0.11 at $8.23 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower by $0.04 to close at $1.56 a gallon.
Metals ended the session mixed today: Gold fell by $6.70 to close at $630.10 an ounce; Silver moved higher by $0.07 to close at $13.12 an ounce; Platinum moved higher by $8.60 to close at $1,209.60 an ounce and Copper ended the day with a loss of $0.22 to close at $3.09 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Lean Hogs moved lower by 1.73 to close at 62.98; Pork Bellies closed lower by 1.85 to end the day at 88.83; Live Cattle moved lower by 0.18 to end the day at 85.70 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by 0.68 to close at 95.70.
Other Commodities: Corn fell again today by 6.50 to close at 359.50 and Soybeans fell again today by 7.00 to close at 662.50.
Bonds were higher across the board today: 2 year Bond closed with a gain of 1/32 at 100 8/32; 5 year bond closed higher by 4/32 at 100 8/32; 10 year bond moved higher by 10/32 to end the day at 100 9/32 and the 30 year bond closed higher by 17/32 at 96 28/32.
The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 3,401,759. Open Interest for Futures rose higher by 3,403 to close at 8,722,061 and the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 68,338 to close at 8,068,448 for a total Open Interest of 16,790,509 for a total gain on the day by 71,741. The mini Dow ended the session with a loss of 7 to close at 12134. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 131,058 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. New York Stock Exchange movers for the day: Scottish Power plc (SPI) moved higher by 2.81 points for a gain of 5.16% to close at $57.32; Rio Tinto plc (RTP) fell sharply by 7.41 points for a loss of 3.27% on the day to close at $219.45; Phelps Dodge Corporation (PD) fell 4.49 points for a loss on the day of 4.44% to close at $96.70; Dolby Laboratories Incorporated (DLB) rallied higher by 34.25% for a gain on the day of 6.76 points to close at $26.50 and NYSE Group Incorporated (NYX) rallied by 6.92 points for a gain today of 7.90% to close at $94.48.
On the NASDAQ today, advancers came in at 1,841; decliners totaled 1,182; unchanged came in at 153; new highs came in at 446 and new lows came in at 46. Gainers and losers for the day on the NASDAQ: Tanox Incorporated (TNOX) rallied higher by 6.11 points for a gain on the day of 44.79% to close at $19.75; e-Future Information Technology Incorporated (EFUT) rallied by 39.29% for a gain of 5.61 points on the day to close at $19.89 and Capella Education Company (CPLA) tacked on 5.11 points for a gain of 25.55% on the day to close at $25.11.
