DCNS, a world leader in naval defence and an innovator in energy, is presenting its developments in the marine renewable energies market, one of its principal growth drivers.
Today DCNS is the only manufacturer in the world working on all marine renewable energy technologies: offshore floating wind turbines, tidal energy, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and wave energy. Drawing on its know-how in naval defence, its industrial resources and its expertise, DCNS covers the whole cycle of these new systems, from design through construction to maintenance.
Benefiting from its 400 years of expertise in shipbuilding and its knowledge of the marine environment, DCNS (dcnsgroup.com) has the ambition of playing a major role in the development of a new marine renewable energies industrial sector in France.
DCNS is presenting the following four technologies on its stand:
• Tidal energy, extracted by submerged turbines known as tidal stream turbines, which convert the energy of marine currents into electricity, as wind turbines do with wind. DCNS has an 11% holding in the capital of the firm OpenHydro. DCNS recently contributed to the EDF tidal energy farm project at Paimpol Bréhat, where the first turbine was deployed in October 2011. Over the next few years DCNS is going to locate an industrial facility in Cherbourg to manufacture tidal stream turbines locally.
• Ocean thermal energy Conversion (OTEC), which uses the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold water from the depths to produce electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. In the very near future, DCNS plans to supply an onshore prototype of the OTEC system to the island of Réunion. DCNS and STX have also submitted a proposal to the Martinique regional council under European directive NER300 for the development and construction of a 10 MW OTEC pilot plant.
• Energy generated by floating wind turbines, through the WINFLO consortium including the industrial firms Nass&Wind and Vergnet, the IFREMER research institute and the ENSTA Bretagne engineering school. After testing on models, production of the WINFLO demonstrator is scheduled for 2012 with a full-scale test planned in 2013.
• Wave energy: DCNS has developed a demonstrator based on the CETO technology which will soon be installed in the sea off the island of Réunion. In October 2011 DCNS also signed a letter of intent with the Finnish company Fortum for a demonstration of wave energy generation in France.
Meanwhile, Frédéric Le Lidec, Director of the DCNS Marine Renewable Energies (MRE) Incubator, invites you to the talk on the industrial development of MREs on Wednesday 11 January at 3.30 pm., during which he will present the DCNS MRE incubator. The purpose of this structure is to bring together the research & development investments of DCNS in this area and prepare the industrial phases of deployment.
