Also, powerful tools are available to support clinical research and staff training.

A Growing Clinical Need
Atrial fibrillation, the most common clinically significant cardiac arrhythmia, affects over 2.3 million people in the United States[1]. An EP study is a minimally invasive procedure that tests the electrical conduction system of the heart to assess the electrical activity and conduction pathways of the heart. The study is used to investigate the cause, location of origin, and best treatment for various abnormal heart rhythms.

GE Healthcare’s CardioLab recording system is used during EP studies for acquiring, filtering, digitizing, amplifying, measuring, calculating, displaying, recording and monitoring clinical data from adult and pediatric patients. The system displays intracardiac waveforms (electrical activity). Now the system improves signal quality over previous GE Healthcare technology. New signal processing algorithms also provide greater waveform fidelity, which can help clinicians differentiate real physiologic signals from noise. The Invasive Workbench[i] tool lets clinicians create their own algorithms and analyze signal data post-procedure, and may give Electrophysiologists additional tools for potentially developing new methods to treat complex arrhthymias.

“GE Healthcare sees its role as a partner helping to empower critical thinking of Electrophysiologists. We are offering exceptional tools for clinical innovation, greateri procedure efficacy and efficiency,” said Jean-Michel Milles, General Manager of Interventional Electrophysiology, GE Healthcare.

Enhanced Signal Display Algorithms
Signal quality is a key tool for Electrophysiologists to pinpoint the origin of heart arrhythmias during diagnostic tests and complex procedures like ablations. Flexible display settings let the user choose waveform characteristics to meet individual physicians’ needs. Physicians can set their preferences for boldness and horizontal and vertical width for ECGs, intracardiacs, and pressures.

Focus More on the Patient, Less on the Processi
Streamlined multi-path documentation and reporting workflow helps the physician document cases with feweri interruptions and minimize workflow bottlenecks. Now the user can begin a study anywhere on the network, and multiple users can document on cases simultaneously. Studies are automatically pulled by the Centricity• INW server after completion, eliminating the need to push studies manually.

“I had the opportunity to evaluate the new functionality in the Mac-Lab and CardioLab Systems. I believe the new workflow has the potential to help us increase efficiency in our Cath Lab by enabling simultaneous documentation in multiple workstations. This has the potential to prevent duplicate entries and help us eliminate numerous bottlenecks in lab workflow, such as having to wait to start a new study while the report is being edited for the previous patient,” said Jeff Mathy, Cath Lab Coordinator, Froedert Hospital in the United States. “I believe the flexibility and ease of use of the Multi-Path workflow in Mac-Lab and CardioLab will allow the staff to concentrate on patient care and less on documentation workflow.”

Convenient Research and Training
Invasive workbench helps expand the power of CardioLab recording, allowing physicians to perform scientific research on any dataset they have previously acquired. It interfaces directly with MATLAB** algorithmic development software and its powerful suite of signal processing tools and graphics. Now the user can develop and apply custom algorithms to analyze signals post-procedure.

This powerful tool supports low-cost testing of early hypothesis or investigations. When a hypothesis is proven, screen capture of waveforms, algorithms, and case data help simplify creating papers suitable for publication. The system supports statistical analysis through MATLAB or via export to Excel**.

CardioLab Simulator[ii], the industry’s first portable simulator, enables training on a convenient schedule. A compact, lightweight box connects to the CardioLab system, allowing display of real case data outside the active patient environment. It comes preloaded with datasets that can be selected on a web-enabled user interface. The rich dataset library covers a wide array of clinical cases and permutations.

Expanding the Power of Visualization
The CardioLab recording system lets the user resize ablation windows and move and position them to suit his or her viewing preferences. Impedance data is displayed before, during and after an ablation event to help the clinician assess transfer of energy from the catheter tip to the point of contact. Temperature recording below 32° F supports cryogenic procedures.

Save Time for Document Compliance
Users can now sign their case reports electronically, transfer the data immediately to data storage and may be able to eliminate report printing. Once signed, the report is locked from editing, although further signatures can be added. E-signatures may also help improve documentation compliance and reporting workflow.
