For years, Americans have been criticized for a lack of global understanding and interest in other countries. High school and college students are looking to change all that, according to CollegeAbroad.com, an overseas online directory of college and university programs.

When current high school students are deciding which colleges they should attend, more of them than ever before are considering colleges in countries other than America.

CollegeAbroad.com is an overseas online directory of college and university programs which provides information and advice for students looking to find their ideal education abroad. Their traffic has steadily increased over the years, and this month marked the largest volume to date with just over 10,000 high school students researching information on college abroad.

"This shows that students are thinking more internationally," says Mark Shay, CEO of CollegeAbroad.com. "They want a full, well-rounded education, and they think their best bet for achieving that will be to go overseas. Plus, they will get to spend their free time in Paris or London or Tokyo."

The last official statistics were compiled by international organization UCAS in 2001, and those numbers showed a 31% increase in U.S. students attending college abroad. Additionally, a 2004 article in the Associated Press declared that Australia had the most American students with 1,600.

The fact that almost ten times that number visited the overseas online directory of college and university programs in one month makes Shay very excited about the future. "Today's students are ambitious, determined and culturally and globally aware," he says. "They also realize that a college degree is not the guarantee for a bright future it once was, and that earning a degree abroad can make them stand out from the crowd and appear more marketable to future employers."

He hopes that the number of interested students will continue to rise, and that these young Americans can begin to alter some views held by the rest of the world.

Any student interested in pursuing an education abroad can to use the CollegeAbroad.com overseas online directory of college and university programs for free. It has an extensive list of international programs as well as original content on countries and cities and a wealth of helpful advice and information.
