ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order from Ystad Hamn, the port authority of the city of Ystad in southern Sweden, to build the complete electrical onshore infrastructure to simultaneously power multiple vessels while berthed.

The shore-to-ship power solutions enable vessels docked in the port to draw all the electricity needed for operating their onboard systems, including ventilation and cooling, from the local power network. The use of shore-side power allows ships to shut off their diesel engines while docked in port. This results in reductions in greenhouse gas and noise emissions as well as vibrations, improving environmental conditions for people in and around the port. It also allows an opportunity window for maintenance work on the engines.

ABB pioneered the shore connection technology using frequency converters to adapt the shore-side power frequency of 50 Hz (hertz) to the 60 Hz system frequency as is the case with most vessels. The new installation will comprise five berths and offer flexibility to simultaneously supply power to vessels with 50 Hz and 60 Hz system frequencies. With a rating of 6.25 MVA (mega-volt-ampere) for 60 Hz power distribution, the substation will be equipped with the largest shore connection frequency converter in the world.

“ABB’s turnkey shore-to-ship power solutions adapt both the voltage level and frequency of electricity from the local grid to match that of each vessel,” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division.

The compact and fully integrated systems can be accommodated in container terminals and city ports. They ensure safe and reliable power supply to all types of ships and enhance living and working conditions for crew, dockworkers, passengers and nearby inhabitants. ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the project. Some of the main products to be supplied include medium-voltage switchgear, power transformers, frequency converters as well as control and protection equipment. The project will be executed in cooperation with Processkontroll Elektriska AB and is expected to be completed by 2012.

ABB is a leading supplier of products, systems and services for shore power connections serving shipping companies, port authorities and power utilities. This includes the entire electrical and automation infrastructure needed onshore and on board – from the in-feed and adaptation of grid power to meet the needs of the vessel, to the shore-to-ship connection including the ship’s onboard power system.

ABB is the world’s leading supplier of turnkey air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kilovolts. These substations facilitate the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation and renewables.

ABB (abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 130,000 people.
