Rovi and Mei Ah Digital Technology Ltd, one of the companies in Mei Ah Entertainment Group, today announced the companies have collaborated to launch a new Chinese online Video-On-Demand (VOD) service called BOYABO (boyabo.com) that provides consumers convenient access to premium movies and TV entertainment. The new service includes movie titles available for digital distribution by the Mei Ah Entertainment Group, including new releases, library content, and television programs. Additional content from other movie studios is expected to be added in the future.
BOYABO offers titles for download-to-own as well as download-to-rent in the DivX format and uses DivX® video and DRM technologies to provide users the freedom to download and enjoy content across an extensive, multi-manufacturer ecosystem of consumer electronics devices, as well as Windows and Mac computers. Mei Ah plans to extend service availability to international markets later this year.
“Rovi was a natural choice to support our efforts to address a growing demand domestically for digital access to premium Chinese and Hollywood entertainment and to support our plans to bring Chinese-language film and TV content to a global audience,” said Steve Law, Executive Director, Mei Ah Digital Technology Ltd. “DivX video technologies not only enable the secure delivery of our entertainment libraries, but more importantly, help power exceptional viewing quality and flexibility with features like multi-language subtitles and audio tracks. With an ecosystem of millions of DivX-Certified devices to choose from, consumers will have many options to enjoy their favorite entertainment at home or on the go.”
DivX technologies are recognized by millions of consumers around the world for delivering great video performance, visual quality, and multi-screen interoperability. Over 500 million DivX devices have shipped into the market worldwide, ranging from Blu-ray players and HDTVs to game consoles and smartphones. DivX movies can be easily transferred via optical disc, USB drive, and SD memory cards or content can be streamed over a home network using DNLA for playback on registered DivX Certified devices.
"The launch of Mei Ah’s new service is a key milestone for Rovi, marking the first major movie studio customer in China,” said Matt Milne, senior vice president of CE sales for Rovi. “Our collaboration with Mei Ah is another strong endorsement of our DivX technologies as a turnkey solution for powering convenient access to high quality entertainment experiences. We look forward to helping Chinese consumers optimize their digital media experience across any screen, while at the same time fueling demand for our customers’ DivX-Certified products in the region.”
DivX devices contain digital rights management technology to enable the secure playback of premium movies in the DivX format. Other online retailers currently offering titles in the DivX format include WB Shop, Media Markt, and Film Fresh.
