ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $15 million to build seven new medium-voltage substations that will supply power to a new metro line in Warsaw. The order is placed by AGP Metro Polska, the joint venture consortium responsible for the overall project. The order was booked in the third quarter.

ABB will construct four combined traction and auxiliary substations rated at 15 kV (kilovolt) / 825V DC (direct current) / 400V AC (alternating current) and three auxiliary substations rated at 15 kV/400V AC for the new Warsaw metro line 2, which is presently under construction and will connect the eastern and western parts of the capital city.

As part of the turnkey project, ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and start-up of the substations including civil works. Each of the DC traction substations will be equipped with four transformer-rectifier groups rated at 2 MW (megawatt) each. The transformers will step down the voltage from the public grid and the rectifiers will convert AC into DC to power the metro cars. Key products to be supplied include medium-voltage switchgear with integrated protection and control devices, dry-type rectifier and auxiliary transformers, diode rectifiers, low-voltage switchgear, substation automation and the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

One of the substations will be equipped also with a 40 MJ (megajoule) energy storage system based on double-layer super-capacitors to exploit the recovered braking energy from the metro cars. ABB will be responsible also for the network management system, which will integrate with the existing system that manages metro line1.

“This is an innovative traction power supply solution incorporating an energy storage system,” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. "Utilizing braking energy from decelerating metro cars and feeding it back into the power supply system will help enhance the energy-efficiency of this metro line further.”

ABB is a leading supplier of products, systems and services for rail infrastructure and rolling stock serving modern, conventional and high-speed rail applications. This includes AC and DC traction substations and railway electrification solutions for the rail industry that provide reliable power for mainline trains, metros and mass transit networks.

Substations are key installations in the power grid that facilitate the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. They include equipment that protects and controls the flow of electrical power. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of air- and gas-insulated substations covering a range of voltage levels up to 1,100 kV.

ABB (abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 130,000 people.
